Best Sailing Wet-weather Gear: Tested, Trusted, and Sea-Ready

Best Sailing Wet-weather Gear
Whether you’re day-sailing, club-racing or heading offshore, the right jacket + salopettes set makes all the difference. Here are the latest picks for reliable sailing wet-weather gear — plus a buyer’s guide to help you choose.

Introduction

When you’re heading out on the water and the sky’s closing in, spray begins to lash the deck and the wind shifts—your wet-weather gear set (jacket plus salopettes) becomes your lifeline. My goal here is to help you choose the best sailing wet-weather gear set that covers you for everything from a breezy coastal day sail to serious offshore work. I’ll explain the testing and ranking criteria—waterproofing, breathability, fit over layers, durability, and value—and then walk you through the best current sets. I remember a blustery weekend in the Solent when the spray caught me out; only the full bibs saved me from feeling like a wet deck sponge.

Best Overall – Gill Men’s OS2 Offshore  Combi Set

Quick Review: A superb all-round sailing wet-weather outfit—jacket and trousers/salopettes—that balances serious protection with usable price for committed sailors. Combines the OS2 jacket with salopettes trousers, made for offshore but highly usable for coastal and day-sailing. Tough fabric with taped seams, comfortable fit for layering underneath, and enough specification to handle more than just calm seas.

Key Specs: XPLORE® 2-layer laminated fabric; 20 000 mm waterproof / 20 000 g breathable; XPEL® water- and stain-repellent finish.

Construction: Durable nylon outer with soft non-absorbent mesh lining.

Seams & Zips: Fully taped seams; YKK® AquaGuard® front zip under double storm flap.

Pockets & Features: Fleece-lined hand-warmer and cargo pockets with drainage, high collar, hi-vis hood, adjustable cuffs.

Gill Men’s OS2 Offshore

Reinforcements: 600D abrasion panels on seat and knees.

Why You’d Want It: If you sail frequently—from day trips through to coastal cruising—and want one set to cover most situations, this is a strong candidate.

Why Not: Not as extreme as dedicated offshore pro sets; if you only sail in mild weather you might be paying for specs you rarely need.Price / Where to Buy: Approx USD ~$810 (other currency equivalents vary). Gill Marine

Fit Tip: Try it on with your base and mid-layer (and life-jacket) underneath to check hood clearance and bib length.

Best Offshore – Zhik Men’s OFS800 Offshore Combi Set

Quick Review: A top-tier full-set for true offshore sailing or major passages— high-spec waterproof/breathable membrane, heavy reinforcements are built for the worst conditions, where staying dry is non-negotiable. Professional-level kit: chest-zip entry, high bibs, full hood system, strong protection zones, high-visibility details.

Offshore Sailing Gear

Key Specs: 4-layer laminated membrane; ≈ 20 000 mm waterproof / 20 000 g breathable; hydrophilic wicking interlayer.

Construction: High-tenacity nylon shell with PU membrane and moisture wicking lining.

Seams & Zips: Fully tape-sealed; YKK® AquaSeal® zips with internal storm guard.

Pockets & Features: Cargo pockets with drain ports; fleece hand-warmers; radio pocket; high-vis storm hood with visor; PU wrist seals.

Reinforcements: Cordura® seat, knees, cuffs.

Why You’d Want It: If you’re planning offshore racing, long-haul cruising or passage-making in rough seas, this set gives you confidence and protection.

Why Not: High cost (approx. USD ~$2,094), bulkier and heavier; overkill if you only sail in mild or protected waters.

Price / Where to Buy: Approx USD $2,094 (check latest regional pricing). zhik.com.

Fit Tip: Because of the high spec and layering required, ensure shoulder/arm mobility is good and bib suspension is comfortable for extended wear.

Best Coastal – Zhik Men’s INS200 Coastal Sailing Combi Set

Quick Review: Excellent for coastal cruising and day-sailing, addressing typical coastal conditions (spray, showers, choppy seas)—you get solid protection but with less bulk and cost than full offshore gear. Good waterproofing and coverage, but optimised for mobility and comfort rather than full offshore armour.

Key Specs: 2-layer laminated nylon with PU coating; 10 000 mm waterproof / 10 000 g breathable.

Construction: Mesh lining for wicking; articulated cut for ease of movement.

Seams & Zips: Fully taped; water-resistant zip with storm flap.

Pockets & Features: Hand-warmers; internal stash pocket; adjustable cuffs and hem; stowable hood.

Reinforcements: Double-layer seat and knees.

Coastal Sailing Gear

Why You’d Want It: For sailors who do many outings in coastal waters, want good protection but don’t need the extreme specs (or price) of full offshore gear.

Why Not: If you decide to step into serious offshore conditions, you might find it under-spec’d.

Price / Where to Buy: Approx USD ~$768/ GBP £600 +. Zhik

Fit Tip: Ensure the bib height is enough for your torso movement, and the jacket hood and collar integrate well with your harness or life-jacket.

Best for Women – Zhik Women’s OFS700 Offshore Combi Set

Quick Review: A premium women-tailored full set (jacket + salopettes) from Zhik, offering offshore-grade protection while accounting for women’s fit and layering. The OFS700 range is described as “uncompromising waterproof protection, breathability and durability” in the jacket. The salopettes offer elite 3-layer waterproof protection with a drop-seat and tailored women’s fit.

Woman's Sailing Gear

Key Specs: 3-layer laminated shell (20 000 mm / 20 000 g); microporous PU membrane.

Construction: 450D nylon outer with drop-seat salopettes design.

Seams & Zips: Fully taped; YKK® AquaGuard® 2-way main zip.

Pockets & Features: Waterproof chest pocket; hand-warmer pockets; cargo pocket on bib; reflective Oralite® panels.

Reinforcements: Cordura® seat, knees and ankle areas.

Why You’d Want It: If you’re a woman sailor going serious—coastal or offshore—you’ll get both performance and a fit designed for you.

Why Not: Cost will be high; you may pay for offshore-spec features beyond your regular need.

Price / Where to Buy: Jacket ~ USD $649.96 (AUD region listing). Salopettes ~USD $372 (approx). Regional GBP/EUR equivalents vary. Zhik

Fit Tip: Try with your full layering system including life-jacket and harness; ensure bib height, hood clearance and mobility feel good.

Best for Petite Women – Helly Hansen Ægir Race Jacket & Salopettes

Quick Review: Now, this category is added in as I’ve sailed with a number of very petite women over the years and know they’ve had a challenge to get a set that does not drag along the deck or loose their hands up the sleeve. A few have opted for the (XS range) from Helly Hansen—the race-inspired Ægir Race collection built for high performance and a compact fit. The Women’s Ægir Race Salopettes feature articulated knees, adjustable waist and ankle cuffs, and a stretch torso with a waterproof YKK VISLON® zipper. The Jacket version delivers full protection from punishing waves and wind—even in smaller sizes. Designed for racing-style sailing, lighter than pure offshore heavy sets.

Key Specs: HELLY TECH® Professional 4-layer jacket / 3-layer salopettes; 15 000 mm / 15 000 g.

Construction: Polyamide outer with DWR; articulated pattern for mobility.

Seams & Zips: Fully sealed; YKK® AquaGuard® and VISLON® zips.

Pockets & Features: Chest and hand pockets with drainage; thigh cargo pocket; SOLAS reflectives; adjustable ankle and waist.

Reinforcements: Cordura® knees, seat and ankles.

Why You’d Want It: If you’re a woman of smaller build doing active sailing (regatta, sport cruising) and want a gear set that fits you—not just a size-down of a men’s cut.

Why Not: While high spec, it may still cost more than a standard coastal set; if you’re purely leisure day-sailing, you could opt for a lighter, cheaper set.

Price / Where to Buy: Jacket listed ~ USD ~$960 (varies). Salopettes ~USD ~$876 (approx). GBP/EUR equivalents vary. Helly Hanson outlet

Fit Tip: Pay attention to bib strap length, torso strap fit, and hood / helmet fit—petite sizing matters more when layering with a life-jacket.

Helly Hansen Ægir Race

Best Budget – Burke Pacific Coastal CB10 Breathable Jacket & Trouser

Quick Review: I had an old set of oilies that I’d probably had for 10 years or more and they were my go to ‘always in the bag’ set. That is, until they started leaking like a sieve. So I needed a new set that would get approved by ‘The Board’ and after much research and discussions with fellow sailors I opted for a cost-effective full set (jacket + trousers/salopettes) from Burke. These are aimed at coastal sailing and frequent in-shore use—not elite offshore—but excellent value.

Burke Pacific Coastal CB10

The trousers (CB10) are 100% waterproof & windproof, high-cut bib design, adjustable braces & waist, abrasion-resistant seat/knee. The jacket uses the CB10 Evolution Breathable fabric, tape-sealed seams, full waterproofing.

Key Specs: CB10 Evolution breathable fabric 12 000 mm / 8 000 g; hydrophilic wicking liner.

Construction: Nylon outer with taped lining for ventilation.

Seams & Zips: Fully tape-sealed; non-corroding two-way zip with storm flap and drain channel.

Pockets & Features: Fleece hand-warmers; cargo pockets with gravity drain; reflective tape; Dartex inner wrist seals.

Reinforcements: Abrasion-resistant seat and knees.

Why You’d Want It: If you sail regularly but in moderate conditions and want decent coverage without spending thousands.

Why Not: Not built for heavy offshore, extreme spray or full passage making; fewer high-end features.

Price / Where to Buy: Jacket ~USD ~$230 (regional sale). Trousers ~USD ~$199 (RRP, regional). GBP/EUR equivalents correspond accordingly. Burke Marine

Fit Tip: Even budget sets benefit from a proper fit—check that the jacket and trousers meet well when you move (sit, lean over rail) and that bibs don’t gap.

Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Right Sailing Wet Weather Gear Set

Firstly, you cannot overstate the obvious – your objective is to stay dray and warm, so always keep that in mind. Here’s a practical buyer’s guide for selecting your jacket + salopettes set:

1. Define your sailing environment.

  • Inshore/day sailing — moderate spray, changeable weather, relatively protected waters.
  • Coastal cruising — heavier spray, frequent weather shifts, longer exposure.
  • Offshore/passage sailing — full weather, long exposure, serious seas.
Kitting accordingly avoids over- or under-spec’ing. (See test methodology in expert review)

2. Waterproofing & breathability for both jacket and salopettes.

Salopettes are as critical as the jacket—they must keep the lower body dry, especially when sitting, trimming, or in splash zones. Manufacturer sites and gear reviews stress salopettes built for “extreme conditions”.

3. Fit, layering & mobility.

You’ll wear base layers, mid-layers, and certainly a life-jacket at some stage. The set must fit over all that and still allow freedom of movement—especially around shoulders, hips, knees. Full-bib salopettes must bounce with deck movement.

Also take the hood out and ensure you can tie it off so your head is covered but you don’t lose complete visibility other than when looking straight ahead.

So the message here is; try them on for fit before you buy, and not just whilst wearing your T-shirt and shorts.

4. Integration between jacket & salopettes.

Check that further overlap exists (so no gap when you lean or sit), that adjustable features (cuffs, hem, bib straps) work together, and that the hood/collar design suits the overall layer stack. For offshore sets, high bibs and tall collars matter.

5. Safety features & reinforcement.

For coastal and offshore, look for reflective patches, reinforced knees/seat on bibs, visors/hoods with adjustability, good visibility, durability features. The newer gear emphasises fewer seams, stronger panels.

6. Durability & maintenance.

Expect marine conditions to demand more—salt spray, UV, hard surfaces. Higher-spec gear tends to last longer. Budget gear is fine if used infrequently or in moderate conditions. Always rinse and dry properly to protect waterproof membranes.

7. Cost vs use case.

If you’re only buying one set and want it to work for coastal, offshore, summer and winter then you will have a challenge. First think about your primary use and the best set for that use case. Don’t overspend/over-spec if your usage is light; but then, don’t under-spec if you face serious conditions and/or these will be worn and test a lot.

I had a one-piece for years and it worked well when sailing around Western Europe (UK and France). The weather was more often wet and/or cold so this one-piece worked well. But it was useless in warmer climates/conditions as you would more often want to just wear salopettes to protect from sea spray etc. with these I’d either sweet it out or leave them in the salon and get wet – neither was a good option I can tell you.

8. Women’s and sizes.

Good fit matters. Women’s gear often has better tailoring for layering, movement and hood/helmet fit. Don’t compromise fit for cost.

9. Where to buy & further resources.

Before purchase, check specialist sailing gear stores and review websites for sizing and user feedback. Also, plan ahead if you can as discounts will often run in the off-season.

Final Verdict

If I were gearing up for a spring cruise and could pick only one full set, I’d choose the Zhik Women’s OFS700 set (if I were female) or the Gill Men’s OS2 set (for general). They hit the sweet spot of protection, durability and value. Admittedly, they aren’t perfect—if I were racing offshore or doing a long passage I’d accept the bulk and cost of an OFS800 or equivalent.

For smaller-built women sailors the Helly Hansen Ægir Race set is the smart choice—fit matters, and comfort often equals performance. For sailors on a tighter budget or doing mostly day sails, the Burke CB10 set offers great value and a decent entry into serious gear.

In short: match the gear to your conditions, your frequency and your sailing goals. Don’t overbuy for conditions you never face—and don’t under-equip for the worst you might find.

In all cases, buy for your conditions, your sailing frequency, your layering system. And don’t forget the fundamentals: good base layers, a competent life-jacket, and a weather briefing before you set sail. Stay dry, stay safe—and enjoy the ride.
